Statement Condemning the Closure of BADDEGI RADIO 90.1 MHz FM by the Niger State Government

The WADATA MEDIA AND ADVOCACY CENTRE (WAMAC) firmly condemns the Niger State Governor, Umar Mohammed Bago, for issuing an order to close BADDEGI RADIO 90.1 MHz FM in Minna.

The purported justification for this action—allegations that the radio station incited public dissent against the government—represents a troubling attempt to suppress press freedom and inhibit the media’s vital role in holding governance accountable.

Such measures threaten the fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), particularly in Chapter Two, Section 22, which empowers journalists to report on government activities and ensure public accountability.

It is particularly disheartening that a government elected through democratic processes would resort to silencing dissent under the guise of maintaining public order.

The closure of BADDEGI RADIO impedes not only the station’s ability to function but also undermines the constitutional rights of journalists and citizens alike.

WAMAC stands in solidarity with organizations such as Amnesty International, the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON), and the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) in denouncing the Niger State Governor’s directive.

This order is inconsistent with constitutional provisions and undermines the statutory authority of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

We call on Governor Umar Mohammed Bago and the Niger State Government to address the concerns raised during a recent broadcast on BADDEGI RADIO through the appropriate channels, particularly by utilizing the principle of the Right of Reply. This proactive engagement would foster transparency and accountability in governance.

Furthermore, WAMAC urges the immediate withdrawal of the closure order against BADDEGI RADIO. In its place, we advocate for an open dialogue between the government and the media, emphasizing the need for fact-based and verifiable statements to clarify any allegations made during the station’s broadcasts in August.
