Boat Mishap Claims Lives in Niger State

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, has confirmed a boat mishap that occurred around Kwata, while heading to the Zumba market in the Shiroro local government area of Niger State.
The incident took place at approximately 11:45 AM on Saturday when a boat loaded with goods and passengers capsized.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Special Duties, Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini, it was noted that the boat driver and a few passengers were rescued, with one individual admitted to the General Hospital in Kuta, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The exact number of casualties is still unknown, as search and rescue operations are ongoing, involving NSEMA desk officers, local divers, and community volunteers.
It is worth mentioning that the Niger State government, the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have previously distributed life jackets to various riverine communities, urging proper usage. However, this has not been effective, contributing to the high number of casualties in boat mishaps.
