Rijau Local Government Chairman Clarifies Misunderstanding on Journalists’ Arrest
Hon. Danladi Kumbo Uganda, the Executive Chairman of Rijau Local Government Area in Niger State, has issued a statement addressing recent claims attributed to him regarding the alleged directive for the arrest of journalists by law enforcement officers in the area.
In an interview with journalists in Minna, Chairman Kombo firmly denied any intention or instruction to arrest newsmen. Instead, he clarified that he had only instructed his media aide to caution social media users against posting disrespectful content related to prominent local politicians, including inaccurately tagging their images with derogatory comments or implying that they were deceased.
He emphasized his commitment to maintaining a cooperative relationship with journalists since assuming office, while expressing concern about the unprofessional behavior exhibited by some youths on social media.
Chairman Kombo underscored that while freedom of speech and criticism are fundamental rights in a democratic society, it is essential to adhere to the ethical guidelines governing these freedoms.
“It is advisable for individuals to address their grievances directly with the politicians rather than resorting to defamatory online behavior,” he remarked, reinforcing the notion that Rijau Local Government is known for its peace and respect for elders.
He called on anyone facing issues to approach the appropriate authorities constructively, rather than resorting to abusive language or damaging reputations.
