National Security : NPF Reactivates Digital Tinted Glass Permit System-
Emphasizes Role in Enhancing Security and Public Confidence

The Nigeria Police Force, under the direction of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reactivated the nationwide issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) through a secure and user-friendly digital platform available at possap.gov.ng.
This initiative responds to widespread public complaints about motorists being harassed due to the use of tinted windows. There is a clear need for a transparent and accountable process for regularizing factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles. As modern automobiles increasingly feature tinted windows, it is essential to create a standardized system that allows for legitimate use while ensuring public safety.
Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, “one-chance” scams, and other forms of banditry. The presence of tinted windows can hinder police visibility and complicate effective law enforcement, contributing to public insecurity.
The reactivation of the permit system is a strategic effort to identify lawful users—such as individuals with medical needs or members of the security community—while preventing misuse in criminal activities. It is expected to enhance police investigative capabilities and strengthen national security.
Applicants can now process their permits online. The permit system includes identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric capture and background checks. The system features QR-coded digital permits and promises a streamlined processing timeline of 72 hours.
A 30-day grace period, effective from May 1, 2025, has been approved to ensure a smooth transition. Motorists are expected to comply within this period, and enforcement will begin after the grace period ends. Officers engaging in unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment during enforcement, will be disciplined according to existing procedures.
The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the Force’s commitment to a technology-driven and citizen-focused policing strategy. He encourages the public to embrace this initiative for safer roads, increased trust, and a more secure Nigeria.
