Explosion Rocks Borno Military Barracks.
From Our Correspondent.
Panic has gripped residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, as multiple explosions rocked the Giwa Barracks in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident reportedly began at around 12:05 a.m., forcing residents in the vicinity out of their homes due to the loud blasts and the sight of red flares illuminating the sky around the barracks.
While the cause of the explosions is still under investigation, local residents confirmed that the blasts originated from the armory area.
One resident, Rakiya Garba, reported seeing fire service personnel with sirens blaring throughout the area.
“We are safe, but we are frightened. The explosion is coming from inside the barracks. It is not an attack because we are not hearing gunshots. However, it has been a series of sporadic explosions,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Borno State’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Umar Kadafur, urged the public to remain calm, explaining that the explosions were caused by a fire incident at the Giwa Barracks armory.
He dismissed rumors suggesting that it was a Boko Haram attack.
He encouraged residents to stay indoors, assuring them that security operatives are managing the situation.
