Federal Government Launches Marine Safety Initiative and Life Jacket Distribution in Niger State.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a marine safety awareness campaign alongside the distribution of life jackets in selected states, starting with Niger State.
The initiative, flagged off by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, at the Government House in Minna, underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and livelihoods of citizens who depend on inland waterways for transportation and commerce.
Minister Oyetola emphasized the immense economic potential of Nigeria’s waterways, which has been threatened by increasing incidents of boat accidents. To address this pressing issue, the first phase of the program will distribute 3,500 life jackets across twelve selected states, including Niger.
In his keynote address, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago, represented by Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the state government with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to implement mandatory life jacket usage and enforce safety regulations on the waterways.
Governor Bago also pointed out the alarming rate of boat mishaps in the state and the government’s commitment to tackle the underlying causes through enforcement, education, and investment.
The Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, praised Governor Bago’s proactive approach to enhancing water transportation and stressed the importance of partnerships in mitigating boat accidents.
Hajiya Hadiza Idris Kuta, the Commissioner for Transport, expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s support, noting the distribution of ambulances and passenger boats, as well as the establishment of water marshals in coastal areas.
Additionally, the Etsu Nupe, Alh. Abubakar Yahaya, represented by Wambai Nupe Engr. Ndagi Aliyu, reiterated the crucial role of traditional institutions in raising awareness and ensuring compliance with safety measures at the grassroots level.
This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the safety of waterways in Nigeria and safeguard the well-being of those who rely on them.
