Customs Vows to Intensify Efforts Against PMS Smuggling in Niger State.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

The Nigerian Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the smuggling of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), labeling this activity as a direct threat to the nation’s economy and security.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, made this announcement at the Niger/Kogi Area Command, where he praised his officers for intercepting 500 jerry cans of PMS at the Babbanna border in Niger State.

Represented by the Assistant Comptroller of Customs in charge of Finance, Administration, and Special Duties, Hussain Kehinde Ejibunu, the CG urged the public to support the service by providing valuable information that could enhance its operations.

In his remarks, the Area Controller of the Niger/Kogi Command, PC Chibuoke, highlighted that the command had seized 500 jerry cans and two drums of PMS at various locations, including the Kabe/Tunga Madugu Road, Kabe/Kigbra Road, Dekara/Gidan Zana Road, and Babana/Guazo Road.

The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items and their means of conveyance is estimated at 25,988,000.00.

He attributed the success of these operations to strong inter-agency collaboration and community engagement in the ongoing fight against economic sabotage.

“The presence of Operation Whirlwind personnel and other officers in this command has strengthened our ability to minimize PMS smuggling,” stated the Controller.

He acknowledged the general manpower shortage within the service but emphasized that with adequate logistics support, such as new patrol vehicles equipped with communication devices, the battle against smuggling and insurgency, especially in the Babana area, would be more effective.

The Controller also expressed gratitude for the continuous support of the Nigeria Customs Service in Minna, viewing it as a reflection of the collective will to foster peace and security in Niger State and across the nation.

“I remain optimistic that this partnership will continue as we look forward to deeper collaboration,” he concluded.
