From Our Correspondent
Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday when an unidentified policeman went on a shooting spree at the bustling Watt business area of Calabar, Cross River State, resulting in three deaths and one injury.
Eyewitnesses reported that the officer emerged from a nearby police station with a loaded gun and began shooting randomly without any provocation. The sudden outbreak of violence caused panic, prompting residents and traders to flee the scene for safety.
One witness, who narrowly escaped the assault, described the incident as shocking and unexpected. “I was heading to the market when I saw people running. I immediately turned back. Unfortunately, some were not so lucky; the bullets hit at least four people,” the witness recounted.
While some witnesses suggested that the policeman had “lost his mind,” the exact reason for the shooting remains unclear. The current casualty count stands at three dead and one seriously injured individual, who is reportedly receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that the officer responsible has been taken into custody. Through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the command announced, “The matter has been addressed this morning, and the inspector is in detention. A press release will be issued shortly.”
However, the police have not yet disclosed the officer’s name or officially confirmed the casualty figures at the time of this report.
Residents of Calabar have expressed outrage over this tragic event, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. “This is not the first time we have heard of such incidents. The police must ensure that this officer faces the full wrath of the law,” remarked a local trader.
