Protests Erupt in Gwer West Over Alleged Murders, Local Government Properties Destroyed.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, irate youths set fire to the Local Government Council Secretariat and the palace of the traditional council chairman, HRH Daniel Abomtse, on Tuesday morning.
This unrest follows the alleged murder of three members of the Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herdsmen on Monday.
The protests began early as local security personnel’s bodies were returned for burial, reflecting deep-seated frustrations over ongoing violence attributed to armed herdsmen.
Sources indicate the youths were not only responding to the recent killings but also voicing their anger over the government’s perceived inaction regarding security in the region.
Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Victor Omirin, noted that while the protests started with the youths, they were later overtaken by hoodlums who initiated the destruction. The chaos also targeted a hotel owned by Senator Titus Zam, among other properties.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Security, Joseph Har, confirmed the events, including the razing of the council secretariat and the palace.
The Gwer West Traditional Council chairman, HRH Daniel Abomtse, reported significant losses at his residence but stated he was en route back to Naka following the unrest.
In response to the situation, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed awareness of the protests and indicated that police were dispatched to the area to manage the unfolding crisis.
Further developments are anticipated as officials work to restore calm.
