Niger State Government Initiates Transition to Alternative Power Supply

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

The Niger State Government is set to transition key facilities, including the Government House, IBB Specialist Hospital, Water Board, and Secretariat, off the national grid in the near future.

This announcement was made by the Governor during a meeting with the Management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) at the Government House in Minna.

The Governor outlined plans for the establishment of a 200 megawatt solar park, along with other initiatives aimed at enhancing alternative power supply for the state.

He noted that the transition to solar energy has already begun, as all streetlights in the state have been converted to solar power.

Additionally, efforts are underway to implement a 25 megawatt mini-grid that will serve all local government areas.

Further, the Governor revealed that the state government is collaborating with a private company to provide solar energy systems to 10,000 households over the next month, with an ambitious target of reaching 100,000 homes by year-end.

While emphasizing the commitment to diversifying the state’s power sources, the Governor urged AEDC to improve power supply, especially given that Niger State hosts four hydroelectric dams.
