In a heartfelt communication to Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, the Campaign for Democracy (CD), a dedicated pro-democracy and human rights organization, has extended its condolences regarding the devastating Dikko fuel tanker fire explosion that tragically claimed numerous lives and caused extensive property damage.
The letter, signed by Dr. Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, State Chairman of the CD, and Comrade Abdulwahid Adenina, Secretary-General of the Coalition of Civil Societies Niger State, described the incident as a “heart-wrenching event” that disproportionately affected children, women, youths, and traders.
The CD offered prayers for the deceased and wished for a swift recovery for the injured, while also acknowledging the efforts of the state and federal governments in providing support to the affected families.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that over 100 individuals fell victim to this tragic incident, with many suffering severe injuries and in need of urgent medical care.
In light of this tragedy, the CD has proposed collaborative initiatives aimed at assisting both the Niger State Government and the federal government through capacity training for drivers, public education campaigns, and heightened advocacy on road safety and industrial safety awareness.
The organization has also urged the federal government to prioritize the rehabilitation of dilapidated federal roads to enhance safety and security.
Additionally, they called for the federal Ministry of Transportation to augment training programs for articulated drivers and other road users.
Emphasizing the vital role of collaboration between government entities and civil society, the CD is committed to preventing future occurrences of such tragic accidents.
The group reaffirmed its support for government policies aimed at enhancing human safety and road security.
The CD’s letter has been shared with various stakeholders, including the Hon. Commissioner for Niger State Ministry for Transportation, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, and the Hon. Minister of Information in Abuja, reflecting the organization’s serious commitment to fostering safer roads in Nigeria.
As the Campaign for Democracy continues its advocacy for road safety, there is hope that the government will take decisive actions to address existing challenges and improve the overall safety of Nigerian roadways.
