Senator Natasha Sues Godswill Akpabio for Alleged defamation.

From Our Reporter.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has initiated a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging defamation.

The suit was filed on February 25, 2025, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, with Senator Akpabio and his Senior Legislative Aide, Mfon Patrick, named as co-defendants.

The case, identified as CV/737/25, asserts that defamatory statements made by Senator Akpabio and disseminated by his aide on Facebook constituted a personal attack on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In particular, a post titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included remarks suggesting that she viewed her legislative role as superficial, focusing unduly on her appearance rather than substantive lawmaking.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attorney, Victor Giwa, contends that the statements are not only disparaging but also damaging to her reputation among colleagues and the public.

The post allegedly described the comments as a reflection of “bottled anger” from the Kogi lawmaker, insinuating a lack of understanding of legislative processes and reducing her career to mere vanity.

In addition to seeking accountability for the alleged defamation, Akpoti-Uduaghan has requested the court to issue a perpetual injunction to prevent the defendants and their associates from making further derogatory statements against her.

The prayer includes a demand for general damages in the sum of N100 billion naira and N300 million naira to cover litigation costs.

The case highlights broader issues of civility and respect within political discourse in Nigeria, especially in the context of gender dynamics in legislative roles.
