NAFDAC warns youths to stay away from alcohol, illicit drugs
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerian youths to stay away from illicit drugs, citing the significant threat they pose to their health and future.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, gave the warning during the inauguration of NAFDAC Catch-Them-Young Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) at Government College Bida.
Adeyeye, who was represented by Pharmacist Harirah Abdullahi, Chief Regulatory Officer, NAFDAC, said illicit drugs are a major public health concern that can lead to addiction, mental health problems, and even death.
She explained that drug addiction can arise from both legal and illicit drugs and emphasised the importance of honest conversations with students to help them make informed decisions.
Adeyeye urged students to resist peer pressure, abstain from drug abuse, and seek professional help if needed.
She also emphasised the importance of teachers’ roles in the fight against drug abuse, encouraging them to work with parents and guardians to identify behavioral problems in students.
In his remarks, Malam Mohammed Danjuma, Principal of Government College Bida, advised the students to take the information on drug abuse seriously, stating that abuse is a global problem.
The event, themed “Your Future Counts: Say No to Illicit Drugs and Yes to Life,” saw the re-establishment of NAFDAC’s Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) at Government College Bida.
