Activists Attacked After Repeated Threats Over Anti-FGM Advocacy
By Umar Bala
Sheila Udoka Udeh, a human rights activist, was brutally attacked on March 19, 2023, after enduring months of threats related to her efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
As the founder of Eradicating Gender Mutilation (EGM), Udoka has been outspoken about the dangers of this practice, making her a target for traditionalists and community leaders.
Eyewitnesses report that armed men ambushed Udoka near Shoprite Parklane in Enugu East LGA, mercilessly beating her and leaving her severely injured.
Prior to the attack, she had reported multiple threats and warnings to cease her activism, but authorities failed to take any action.
As authorities continue to ignore the case, it is crucial to revisit this attack to highlight the ongoing threat to Udoka’s safety and the lack of justice for the victims of this violence.
