NAFDAC intensifies war against substance abuse among Nigeria youths

From Our Correspondent

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned youths on the dangers of illicit drugs and alcohol, describing substance abuse as a major public health concern.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Christianah Mojisola Adeyeye, said this in a keynote address during a “Catch Them Young” sensitisation programme held at Government Model Secondary School in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger state.

She emphasised the agency’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of Nigerians, particularly youths, from the dangers of illicit drugs and alcohol.

Adeyeye, who was represented by Pharmacist James Kigbu, Niger State Coordinator of NAFDAC, warned that illicit drugs and alcohol could lead to addiction, mental health problems, and even death.

She expressed concern about the increasing rate of substance abuse among youths in the country.

The NAFDAC Director General noted that the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol required collective efforts to address.

She emphasised the need for collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, parents, and educational institutions.

In his remarks, Malam Ibrahim Idris, Principal of Government Model Secondary School, Suleja, commended NAFDAC’s efforts in addressing substance abuse among youths.

He advised the students to take deliberate steps against substance abuse.

Idris encouraged NAFDAC to embark on physical projects to increase its visibility.

The Niger state coordinator of NAFDAC inaugurated the Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) at the school, with 330 students inaugurated as members.

The club aims to promote awareness about the dangers of substandard products and unwholesome practices.
