Residents Killed, Bank Destroyed as Petrol Tanker Catches Fire
Tragedy struck in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Sunday when a petrol tanker burst into flames, resulting in several fatalities. The incident occurred near a First Bank branch along the busy Old Lagos/Asaba Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker ignited, causing panic in the surrounding area. Residents stated that the fire quickly engulfed vehicles, houses, and businesses, leaving behind charred remains of victims at the scene. Videos circulating online depicted the desperate efforts of residents attempting to extinguish the fire while waiting for firefighters to arrive.
One witness, Mr. Chuks Ogwude, described the scene as horrific: “The fire spread quickly, and people were helpless. We tried to assist, but there was little we could do. The authorities need to act fast to prevent further incidents like this.”
Residents expressed their anger over the delayed response from emergency services, noting that such incidents had become frequent due to poor road maintenance and reckless driving by tanker operators. Mrs. Ebele Chiejine, a local resident, stated, “We have seen many accidents on this road because tankers are not properly monitored. The government must ensure safety measures are put in place.”
Multiple buildings and vehicles near the scene were reduced to ashes, and some structures remained engulfed in flames at the time of reporting. The Delta State Police Command and fire service personnel eventually arrived to manage the situation.
In a reaction to the tragedy, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed his deep sorrow, confirming that four people were killed and three others sustained injuries. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, he described the incident as horrifying and extended his condolences to the families affected, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families. This tragic incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The governor also instructed relevant agencies to act swiftly in providing necessary support to those affected by the incident, ensuring that the injured receive the best possible care and that families who lost loved ones are supported.
“I commend the Delta State Fire Service, residents, and security agencies for their prompt response in containing the fire and assisting the victims. Your selflessness and courage in the face of such a disaster are commendable,” Oborevwori added.
