Concern Grows as Earth Tremors Persist in Abuja

Residents in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, are increasingly alarmed by a series of persistent earth tremors affecting the Maitama, Katampe, and Mpape areas. The tremors, which began last weekend and have continued intermittently, have raised concerns about the stability and safety of the affected communities.

Earth tremors, although generally less severe than full-fledged earthquakes, are caused by geological forces similar to those that lead to earthquakes. These minor shifts in the Earth’s surface, while not uncommon, can be unsettling, particularly in densely populated regions like Abuja.

The current tremors have reminded many residents of a similar incident in 2018 when a 3.2 magnitude tremor was recorded near Mpape. At the time, the tremors were attributed to natural geological processes, with authorities reassuring residents that there was no imminent threat of an earthquake.

This time, however, the situation has been marked by a lack of communication from relevant authorities. Residents have expressed frustration over the silence from organizations such as the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Federal Ministry of Environment, which has heightened anxiety and speculation.

Many have taken to social media, sharing their concerns and demanding clear explanations.

The ongoing tremors have disrupted daily life, leading to sleepless nights for residents who remain uncertain about the future.   As of now, there has been no official statement from the NGSA or any government body addressing the cause or potential risks of the current tremors.

The affected areas remain on edge as residents await a formal response and guidance from the authorities.
