NASS expresses concern over nature of facilities in NYSC orientation camp in Niger
The House of Representatives Committee on Youth and Development, has expressed concern over the nature of existing facilities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Niger state and called on authority concerned to improvement on the facilities.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Martins Esin, made the call when he led other members of the committee on oversight function to the NYSC orientation camp in Niger state.
He said the committee had established contact with Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger and he had promised that intervention would be carried out in the camp beginning from Jan. 2024.
“We have gone round the camp, inspect the male and female hostels and the clinic, there is need for improvement in the camp facilities.
“The male hostel need more beddings, these corps member are serving the country, and as such we should make the environment conducive for them to give their best service,” he said
Esin disclosed that the national assembly was interested in the well-being of NYSC considering what the scheme represent of fostering national unity and integration among Nigeria youths.
He said the Speaker of the House, Mr Tajudeen Abbas and the committee leadership had resolved to oversee activities of the scheme and offer support for optimal performance.
He, however, advised the corps members to be security conscious, adding that corps members have become soft target for criminals and enemies of the country.
Earlier in her address, Mrs Abdulwahab Olayinka, NYSC Coordinator in Niger, said 1,495 corps members posted to Niger and those dislodged from FCT were registered for 2023 Batch C, Stream 1 orientation course in the state.
She said the corps members had displayed a high sense of discipline, adding that adequate security were on ground to safe-guard the orientation camp.
Olayinka, however, said the scheme was faced with challenges of shortage of camp facilities, erosion control issue and inadequate boreholes for water supply.
She added that already the present administration led by Gov. Mohammed Umaru Bago had showed concern to improve on facilities at the orientation camp.
