Niger Gov. warn corps members against engaging in drug abuse, cybercrime

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger state has asked corps members to avoid the temptation of indulging in drug abuse, trafficking, cybercrime and other negative acts capable of portraying the scheme in a bad manner.

He gave the warning during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch B, Stream One orientation course of corps members deployed to the state and those dislodged from FCT at Paiko local government area of the state.

Bago, who was represented by Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the state Government, advised the corps members to be good ambassador of the scheme.

“You must remember that being a corps member does not confer on you immunity from the legal consequences of any wrongdoing.

“I therefore, enjoined you to be law abiding and serve as role model to younger ones in communities you are posted to for your primary assessment,” he said.

He cautioned them to avoid use of social media for ethnic prejudices, rumor peddling and hate-speech, rather they should use it to promote unity and peace in the country.

The governor, however, appealed to employers to accept corps members posted to them, treat them justly and fairly by making necessary provisions for their welfare.

Earlier in her address, Mrs Abdulwahab Alidat, NYSC Coordinator in Niger, urged the corps members to accept their posting in good faith and discharge their duties as guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye-laws.

He urged them to desist from meddling in local politics, rather they should embark on personal and group Community Development Service Projects to up lift the living standard of people of their host communities.

Alidat implored the corps members to be security conscious, avoid attending night parties, visitations of dangerous places and acceptance of car ride and gifts from strangers.
