NAPTIP Ramps Up Anti-Trafficking Campaign in Niger, Warns Public Against ‘Deceptive Scam’

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Niger State Command, has intensified its campaign against human trafficking, warning residents to be wary of what it described as a growing web of deception targeting vulnerable persons.

The State Commander of the agency, Mr. Emmanuel Awhen, gave the warning during activities marking the 2026 World Day Against Human Trafficking, observed annually on July 30.

Awhen explained that this year’s theme, “Trapped Behind The Scam,” reflects the evolving tactics of traffickers who exploit desperation and ignorance to lure unsuspecting victims.

He noted that traffickers often approach individuals, particularly youths and the less privileged, with promises of lucrative jobs and better living conditions abroad.

According to him, many of the victims end up in situations of exploitation, abuse, and forced labour after falling for such deceptive offers.

“Human trafficking itself is a scam. Victims are deceived, and when they get to their destination, their documents are seized, leaving them stranded and unable to reach out for help,” he said.

As part of efforts to raise awareness, the command organised road walk sensitisation campaigns in Bida on Wednesday and in Minna, the state capital, on Thursday.

The sensitisation exercise attracted participation from traditional institutions, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders committed to tackling human trafficking.

Awhen said Bida was deliberately selected for the campaign due to its vulnerability, describing it as one of the areas with recurring cases of trafficking in the state.

He added that the Minna awareness walk, which commenced from the Mobil Filling Station to the Women Multipurpose Centre, provided an opportunity to engage directly with residents.

Participants also distributed information materials and educated the public on how to identify and report trafficking-related activities.

The commander emphasised the importance of public involvement, urging residents to promptly report suspicious movements and activities to relevant authorities.

He disclosed that the agency works closely with the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and other partners in tackling the menace.

Awhen appreciated the Niger State Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs for their continued support, particularly in providing shelter and rehabilitation for rescued victims.

Highlighting achievements, he revealed that NAPTIP has rescued six children in the state and is currently prosecuting five suspects, while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to sustained enforcement and collaboration.

He further described Niger State as both a recruitment and transit hub for traffickers, noting that many cases remain unreported due to fear and lack of awareness.

“If you see something, say something. Reporting cases can help us track down traffickers and save lives,” he urged, assuring that the NAPTIP office in the state remains open and accessible to the public.
