Two Chinese Nationals Held in Niger State for Illegal Mining

The Niger State Government has increased efforts to combat illegal mining activities, resulting in the arrest of two Chinese nationals for violating the state’s strict regulations against unauthorized mining.
According to a statement released in Minna by Yunusa Saidu Ibrahim, Director of Information and Orientation Services at the Ministry of Information and Orientation, the arrests occurred during a strategic inspection led by Honorable Muhammad Qasim Danjuma (Danrimin Agaie), the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, at the Zuzungi Mining Site.
This operation uncovered ongoing illegal mining activities in clear violation of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the sector in Niger State.
The individuals involved, operating without valid licenses and breaching approved guidelines, were promptly transferred to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and potential prosecution under Nigerian law.
The inspection team, including the Permanent Secretary, ministry officials, and security personnel, demonstrates the State Government’s renewed commitment to crack down on illegal operators, regardless of nationality, who exploit mineral resources unlawfully.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reaffirmed Niger State’s zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining. He stressed the importance of following due process, obtaining necessary licenses, and adhering to environmental and safety protocols. He issued a stern warning that any violations will lead to immediate, strict sanctions.
He also highlighted that illegal mining not only reduces government revenue but also causes environmental damage and threatens local community safety. Therefore, the State remains committed to protecting its natural resources through ongoing enforcement, increased regulatory oversight, and collaborative efforts among agencies.
The Permanent Secretary confirmed that the suspects are currently detained while awaiting submission of relevant documents. This decisive action aligns with the vision of His Excellency, the Farmer Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, as outlined in the New Niger Agenda, which promotes transparency, lawful resource management, and sustainable development within the mining sector.
