Niger State Squash Association Chairperson Addresses Decline in Female Participation
Mrs. Taiwo Akinkoye, Chairperson of the Niger State Squash Association (NSSA), has expressed concern over the persistent decline in the number of girls participating in the monthly squash league.
A former top-ranked player for Niger State, Akinkoye made her observations during an interview shortly after the presentation of cash prizes to winners at the 9th edition of the league, held last Saturday at the Minna Sports Club Squash section.
Having started playing squash in the 1980s before representing Niger State, Akinkoye recounted her journey and the dedication that led her to become Nigeria’s number one. She urged parents and guardians to support their daughters in training and competing, emphasizing her role as NSSA Chairperson.
She voiced concern about the waning interest among modern girls compared to her era, highlighting squash as a valuable sport that keeps youth engaged and develops skills beneficial for life. “In our days, we worked very hard to excel, unlike today. Many girls are not willing to put in the effort to become champions,” she stated.
In recent developments, new winners emerged in both the senior male and female categories during the March 2027 league edition. Aliyu Ibrahim defeated champion Gideon Bala Ibrahim in the senior boys’ category, while Destiny Tomizayi outperformed Chioma Aniekwe.
Isaac Afokhai retained his intermediate category title after defeating Goodluck Jerry. The league is sponsored by Mr. Seye Akinkoye, a former member of the Niger State Squash family now living abroad.
