Breaking : Leaders of Opposition Coalition Meet to Discuss Electoral Legislation

Prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the 2023 Labour Party presidential nominee Peter Obi, gathered at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja to discuss the Electoral Act.
Also present were former Senate President David Mark, New Nigeria Peoples Party leader Buba Galadima, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress.
The meeting, held at the Lagos/Osun Hall, aimed to address contentious provisions of the Electoral Act and other key national issues. Attendees included ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and ex-Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.
The discussion focused on the Electoral Act 2022, which allowed political parties to nominate candidates through direct, indirect, or consensus primaries.
The newly enacted 2026 Electoral Act, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18, now requires either direct primaries or consensus, with shorter campaign periods and primary timelines.
Funding for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will now be released six months before elections, replacing the previous twelve-month period.
