Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) Urged to Establish Fair and Transparent Electricity Tariffs

The Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) has been urged to implement a cost-effective, transparent, and equitable electricity tariff for consumers in the state.
This appeal was made by the Commissioner of Power and Renewable Energy, Suleiman A D Umar, during the opening ceremony of a three-day Energy Management and Regulation training for NSERC members at the State’s Secretary to the Government Conference Hall in Minna.
Umar emphasized that Farmer Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago, upon establishing the commission last year, recognized that strong regulation is essential for a functional electricity market. It encourages investment, protects consumers, and ensures reliable power.
Therefore, the commission’s staff must be equipped with technical skills, good judgment, and continuous training.
In his remarks, the Commission’s Chairman, Engr Mohammed Sharu, stressed the importance and timeliness of the training. He said it would not only provide basic knowledge of electricity regulation but also introduce staff to modern tariff methodologies.
He urged participants to pay close attention and ask questions actively.
The Chairman reaffirmed that ongoing staff training and retraining are top priorities for effectively meeting the commission’s goals.
Resource persons from Rockstar Energy Limited, including Dr. Godwin, Dr. Shittu, and Barrister Tony Ray, delivered presentations on the regulatory framework, legal and institutional mandates, and the electricity value chain. They offered insights into key industry players in Nigeria and Niger State.
Participants described the first day of the workshop as highly educational, illuminating, and insightful.
