Army rescues 1,023 kidnap victims, recovers 189 guns in northwest

The Nigerian Army has rescued 1,023 kidnapped victims, recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, and seized 4,338 rounds of ammunition during various operations in the North West in 2025.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Sokoto, Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, disclosed this during the presentation of awards at the closing ceremony of West African Social Activities (WASA) on Wednesday in Sokoto.
Ajose stated these successes were achieved by the Sector 2 Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) in fighting terrorism and banditry in the region.
Over the year, troops successfully rescued 1,023 kidnapped victims, recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, and seized 4,338 rounds of ammunition.
”Others included seizure of 305 motorcycles used by bandits, recovery of 4,123 stolen livestock, and neutralization of several high-profile bandit leaders,” Ajose said.
He added that these efforts have restored security and economic confidence in the region, allowing farmers and residents to return to their daily routines without fear.
The GOC credited the successes to the unwavering dedication of the Division’s personnel and the strategic leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.
Ajose also highlighted the Division’s focus on improving troop welfare, including upgrades to medical facilities and accommodations.
He noted that these initiatives have played a key role in maintaining morale and operational effectiveness.
Expressing gratitude to the COAS for his support, Ajose pledged to build on this year’s achievements in line with the COAS’s command philosophy.
He explained that the WASA celebration marked the culmination of a year filled with significant operational victories against banditry.
The event also showcased the Division’s diverse cultural heritage and served as a platform to honor the bravery and dedication of troops in protecting communities across the region.
”As the year concludes, the 8 Division reaffirms its commitment to building on these successes, ensuring a safer and more secure northwest region for all citizens,” Ajose stated.
Retired Col. Ahmed Usman, the Special Adviser on Security to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, praised the Nigerian Army’s dedication to national security.
Usman, who called WASA a historic symbol of unity, discipline, and cultural pride, reaffirmed the state government’s ongoing partnership with the military to promote peace and prosperity.
He also commended the newly appointed COAS for his outstanding leadership.
