Niger state governor Umaru Bago says NYSC remains Nigeria’s symbol of unity

From Our Correspondent

Niger State Governor, Mohamed Umaru Bago, has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a lasting symbol of Nigeria’s unity, emphasizing its ongoing importance in bridging cultural differences and strengthening national bonds.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Batch “C’ orientation course at the Paiko camp in Bago, Dr. Muhammad Makusidi, who represented the speaker, highlighted the role of the scheme in fostering patriotism, resilience, and tolerance among young Nigerians.

He stated that the orientation program has been the foundation of a successful national service year. He reminded corps members that their deployment to various regions across the country aligns with the NYSC’s mission to promote unity.

The governor encouraged the participants to actively participate in the SAED program to gain practical skills that will boost their employability.

He assured them that the state government is committed to upgrading camp facilities and enhancing security for all corps members.

Earlier, in her welcome speech, the Niger State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Martina Shuaibu Ibrahim, urged the 2025 Batch ‘C’ corps members to uphold discipline, patriotism, and self-reliance as they begin their one-year national service.

She acknowledged the support of the state government, traditional rulers, security agencies, and other stakeholders in ensuring the smooth running of NYSC programs in Niger State.

The Coordinator congratulated the corps members on completing their academic pursuits and on their readiness to serve the nation, especially through their deployment to Niger State.

She stated that the orientation course is designed to prepare corps members both physically and mentally for the challenges of national service through paramilitary drills, leadership lectures, and citizenship training.

“One of the key objectives of the NYSC is to promote national integration. Your deployment alongside individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds exemplifies this noble goal.

This is a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of our country while fostering values of friendship, peace, harmony, and a shared vision of a great and prosperous Nigeria,” she said.

Mrs. Shuaibu-Ibrahim emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship and skill development, noting that the program aims to empower corps members for self-reliance, self-employment, and wealth creation.
She further urged them to steer clear of social vices such as cultism and drug abuse and to exercise caution when using social media.

She also underscored the significance of the oath of allegiance that the corps members are taking, describing it as a guide for their conduct during and after their national service.
