NIIA Awards Governor Bago with Professorial Chair in Food and Human Security.

The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) has honored Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago by establishing a “Professorial Chair in Food and Human Security” in his name.
This announcement was made by NIIA Director General Prof. Eghosa Osaghae during the 2025 World Food Day celebration held in Lagos, which was themed “Food Security to Food Sovereignty: How Far Has Nigeria Gone?”. Governor Bago served as the keynote speaker at the event.
Prof. Osaghae emphasized the global significance of Governor Bago’s work, particularly in the agricultural sector, which warranted the establishment of this chair in perpetuity. He highlighted that the endowment aims to reinforce the governor’s initiatives and contributions to inclusive agricultural development.
In a statement, Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, explained that this honorary chair seeks to build upon Bago’s efforts in transforming agriculture into “a diplomatic art.” This innovative approach leverages agricultural policies for broader diplomatic and economic engagement.
Prof. Osaghae further articulated the NIIA’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in agricultural practices, stating, “In its 64 years of existence, the NIIA has underscored the importance of consolidating advancements in governance and development. This professorial chair will cultivate a knowledge-based framework that supports ongoing efforts in agricultural mechanization and value chain development.”
Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA Governing Council, commended Governor Bago for his relentless dedication to national development, especially amidst the prevailing security challenges in North Central Nigeria.
He described the governor as a visionary leader whose integration of governance and research is crucial for fostering peace, sustainability, and food sovereignty.
This collaborative recognition underscores the necessity of knowledge-driven governance in addressing the complex issues surrounding food security and sustainable development in Nigeria.
