Residents of Tudun Fulani/Maikunkele Feeder Demand Action from AEDC Over Prolonged Power Outage

By Yahaya Zakka Minna.

The residents and electricity consumers of the Tudun Fulani/Maikunkele feeder have taken a strong stand against the prolonged power outage affecting their communities, formally petitioning the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for urgent intervention.

The petition, submitted by their attorney, I.U. Wali, on September 16, 2025, via the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission, calls for immediate action to restore electricity and protect the rights of consumers.

The affected feeder services several neighborhoods, including Maikunkele, Rafin Yashi, Tudun Fulani, Bosso Estate, and Jikpan, among others, contributing to the daily lives of thousands of residents.

The community has endured over 47 days of darkness, leading to significant disruptions in daily activities, education, and local businesses.

Barr. Wali highlighted the devastating impact of the outage, stating that many families have been forced to rely on expensive and dangerous fuel for generators.

He pointed out that consumers with prepaid meters have lost service despite loading credits, amounting to an unfair confiscation of their funds. Meanwhile, those without prepaid meters are receiving estimated bills, which contradicts established billing practices and electricity regulations.

The petition underscores the AEDC’s apparent neglect of the residents’ plight, marked by a lack of communication and support throughout this crisis.

Community members have expressed deep concerns about how the ongoing power failure has negatively affected children’s education, hampered economic activities, and plunged families into financial hardship.

Residents are urging the Niger State Government and the regulatory agency to take decisive action to restore power to homes, schools, and businesses. They are also demanding sanctions against the AEDC for neglect, discriminatory practices, and failure to meet its obligations.

Additionally, the community seeks refunds for all affected consumers, regardless of their billing status, for the duration of the blackout. They are requesting the establishment of a transparent remedial plan that includes timelines and commitments to ensure a reliable power supply, aiming to safeguard consumer rights and rebuild trust in the electricity sector.
