A 16-year-old senior secondary school student and her older sister have been arrested by police in Jikwoyi, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in an attempt to extort five million naira (₦5 million) from their father.
The sisters reportedly conspired with the older sister’s boyfriend to execute this fraudulent scheme. According to police sources, the teenage girl was reported missing by her family, which caused significant worry and distress.
However, investigations soon revealed that the supposed abduction was planned internally, with ransom demands sent to the unsuspecting father.
Acting on intelligence, security operatives traced the origin of the calls and apprehended the three individuals. The police have confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will face charges once the ongoing investigations are concluded.
Authorities have condemned the act, describing it as criminal and emotionally devastating. The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents, with many calling for stronger parental guidance and youth education on the legal consequences of such actions.
