Heavy Downpour Washes Away Buildings, Bridge, and Culvert in Niger Community.

By Our Reporter.

The Niger State government has pledged to begin the rehabilitation of the one-kilometer Man Musa Kodogi/Nasarafu road in the Bida local government area in response to the recent heavy rainfall that caused significant damage to the area.

Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Mohammed Yakubu Kolo, made this announcement while leading a government delegation to assess the damage caused by the rainstorm that struck the two communities on Saturday, June 14, 2025, between 3 AM and 8 AM. The storm resulted in the collapse of buildings, a bridge, a culvert, and various business premises.

During the site visit, Kolo, alongside Dr. Murtala Bagana, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, expressed heartfelt sympathy to those affected by the destruction.

He assured residents that the state government would commence rehabilitation of the one-kilometer road within the next forty-eight hours to prevent future occurrences.

Kolo emphasized that addressing the ecological challenges in the area is of utmost importance.

Residents have attributed the flooding to the actions of Arab Contractors, the firm responsible for the construction of the road from the low-cost housing area to the Federal Polytechnic and G.R.A road in Bida.

They accused the contractors of diverting drainage systems, which led to a large volume of water flooding the two communities and causing property damage worth millions of naira.

Despite the challenges, residents praised the state government’s prompt response by dispatching members of the executive council to offer sympathy to the victims.

They also commended Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago for his significant achievements in infrastructure development across the state.

Yakubu Mohammed, a stakeholder from Man Musa Kodogi, explained that the two communities have been dealing with severe erosion problems since 2014, even before the road construction began.

He stressed the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further property damage, noting that the effects of the erosion have left many people homeless.

“Our people are suffering greatly,” Mohammed said. “One would not believe that this is happening in Bida town. The rain on Saturday, June 14, 2025, has left many homeless, and business owners have faced immense hardship. Their economic activities have been paralyzed.

We, therefore, appeal to Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago to urgently come to our aid and rescue our people.”
