Impending Deportation of 3,690 Nigerians in the United States Amid Immigration Crackdown

From Our Correspondent.

Recent reports indicate that approximately 3,690 Nigerian nationals residing in the United States are facing potential deportation as part of a broader immigration enforcement initiative under President Donald Trump.

This initiative signifies a renewed effort to address illegal immigration, following the president’s inauguration and the signing of several executive orders aimed at tightening immigration policies.

According to a document reviewed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically the Enforcement and Removal Operations division, the data highlights the number of individuals facing deportation, categorized by nationality.

As of November 24, 2024, there are over 1.4 million non-citizens within ICE’s non-detained docket who have received final removal orders.

Mexico and El Salvador are notably the countries with the highest numbers of individuals at risk of deportation, totaling 252,044 and 203,822, respectively.

This enforcement action has resulted in the apprehension of numerous migrants, with reports of individuals being transported out of the country on military aircraft. The increased concern among Nigerians, particularly those residing illegally in the U.S., stems from President Trump’s declaration of a rigorous approach to illegal immigration.

Furthermore, President Trump has implemented measures that include the cessation of birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants, reinforcing his commitment to a stringent immigration policy.

He has also declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and announced the deployment of additional military troops to combat what he describes as threats to national security posed by illegal immigration.

The recent diplomatic tensions with Colombia further complicate the situation. Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially resisted the U.S. government’s plan to use military aircraft for deportations but later agreed to allow such operations provided that conditions for deportees would be dignified.

This resolution came after a back-and-forth exchange of tariffs and threats between the two nations, which highlighted the contentious nature of immigration policies under the Trump administration.

As the situation evolves, many Nigerians and other African nationals in the U.S. remain anxious about their status and the potential for deportation as enforcement measures intensify.

The implications of these policies continue to unfold, drawing attention to the broader issues of immigration and national security in the United States.
