Tension as US Supreme Court Refuses to Delay Trump’s Sentencing in Hush Money Case

US president-elect Donald Trump has once again failed in his attempt to postpone his sentencing in the hush-money case.
On Thursday, the US Supreme Court declined to delay the upcoming sentencing.
Trump is set to be sworn in as US President on January 20th and had requested the nation’s highest court to cancel Friday’s (today) sentencing.
This request followed a decision by a New York court, which refused to postpone the sentencing ordered by Judge Juan Merchan.
Judge Merchan presided over Trump’s trial in May 2024, where he faced 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Judge Merchan clarified that while no jail time, fines, or probation would be imposed, attorneys for Trump argue that a felony conviction could have significant repercussions.
They believe it may distract him as he prepares to take office in just over a week.
The Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority, includes three justices appointed by Trump during his first term as president.
Trump’s emergency motion was submitted to Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who handles emergency appeals from New York.
