UK Stand Firm on Greenland Sovereignty Amid US Pressure, Says PM Starmer
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized in parliament on Wednesday that the UK will not capitulate to pressure from US President Donald Trump regarding the future of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
“I will not yield; Britain will not compromise on our principles and values concerning Greenland, despite threats of tariffs,” he stated, also announcing plans to host Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in London on Thursday.
Trump has warned of imposing tariffs on Britain and other European nations that oppose his claims over Greenland.
In Parliament, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch challenged Starmer on Trump’s criticism of Britain’s agreement over the Chagos Islands.
The deal involves Britain transferring control of the Chagos archipelago—located about 2,000 kilometers northeast of Mauritius—to its former colony and leasing a US-UK military base there for a century.
Responding to the criticism, Starmer asserted, “President Trump’s comments aimed to pressure me into abandoning my principles. His remarks on Chagos were made in the same sentence as those on Greenland, which was his intent.”
He concluded, “The future of Greenland is a binary issue currently dividing the world, with significant consequences. My position remains clear and consistent: Greenland’s future is for Greenland and Denmark alone.”
