Niger State Set to Host 2025 Basketball Tournament in Minna with Participants from 19 States

The Niger State Sports Commission (NSSC) has officially confirmed plans to host the Bago National Division One Basketball League in Minna in 2025, with the event scheduled from November 22 to 29.
At a press briefing held at the 1-2-3 indoor sports hall within Savannah Conference Center in Minna, NSSC Chairman Danjuma Abdul Masu announced that the tournament will feature teams from 19 states registered with the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
Masu underscored the commission’s commitment to promoting sports development across various categories, aligned with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s mandate to prioritize athletic excellence and encourage widespread participation in the state.
He also highlighted the NSSC’s openness to partnerships focused on infrastructural improvement and sports growth, noting that two teams could be promoted to the national league following the tournament.
Reaffirming Niger State’s dedication to restoring its sports legacy, Masu referenced the Niger Potters Basketball Club’s historical contribution to nurturing international stars and champions.
Despite current relegation to the second division, efforts are underway to elevate the team back to the top tier and reclaim its international stature.
Furthermore, plans are already in motion for Niger State to host the 2030 National Sports Festival, aiming to test and enhance facilities to support future sporting achievements.
Masu emphasized that the NSSC operates independently from government authority and called on the media to help attract private sector investments and boost patronage vital for the organization’s success.
The department has allocated N30 million for the ten-day championship.
Meanwhile, Abdulrahaman Mohammed, head of the technical team, expressed satisfaction with the team’s composition of youth and experienced players.
He noted their high motivation, driven by government investment, to secure victory in the tournament.
