Niger State Assembly Begins Screening of Commissioner Nominees, with Bello Having Stepped Down

By Yahaya Zakka

The Niger State House of Assembly has commenced the screening process for commissioner nominees slated for appointment to the Niger State Executive Council.

The session, held at the Assembly complex, started with ten nominees out of the thirty proposed by the Niger State Governor.

The first nominee, Mu’azu Hamidu Jantabo from Lapai Local Government, was unanimously approved by the House. Other confirmed nominees include Hadiza Asabe Mohammed Bida, Kabiru Abbas Mariga, Nasiru Muazu Chanchaga, Lawal Mohammed Kontagora, Abubakar Musa Paikoro, Barrister Maurice Magaji Munya, Bashir Mohammed Lokogoma Wushishi, and Murtala Bagana from Bida.

The House Speaker described the swift confirmations as a historic milestone for the Assembly, marking a significant achievement in the state’s legislative history.

The nomination of Muhammad Bello Agwara was temporarily deferred following a motion by Chief Whip Abubakar Kabir, who cited Agwara’s prior legal actions against the House as a breach of trust.

After the screening, Murtala Bagana expressed his gratitude to Niger State Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago for the trust and the nomination to serve as a commissioner.

The Assembly adjourned to resume the screening process on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
