Trump Instructs the US War Department To Prepare Action Against Nigeria
President Trump recently claimed that Christians in Nigeria are facing an “existential threat,” urging American lawmakers to investigate what he described as “mass slaughter” in the country.
Nigeria has been designated a “country of particular concern” by the U.S. State Department due to severe violations of religious freedom.
In response, President Bola Tinubu rejected the notion that Nigeria is hostile to religious freedom, asserting that the country is dedicated to protecting the rights of citizens of all faiths.
He stated, “Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”
On Saturday, Trump escalated his rhetoric, threatening to send U.S. forces into Nigeria “with guns blazing” if the country does not address what he perceives as the killing of Christians by Islamist extremists.
In a provocative post on his Truth Social platform, he mentioned that he had requested the Pentagon to develop a potential plan of attack, following his earlier warning about Christianity facing an existential threat in Nigeria.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” he wrote.
He continued, “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.” He concluded his post with a stark warning: “WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
Nigeria is currently facing various conflicts that have resulted in casualties among both Christians and Muslims. Trump’s claims, made without evidence, included assertions that “thousands of Christians are being killed” and that “radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter.”
Allegations of Christian persecution have also been propagated by some individuals in Nigeria, where ethnic, religious, and regional divisions have historically led to violence and continue to influence the country’s modern politics. Nigeria is nearly evenly split between a Muslim-majority north and a predominantly Christian south.
