Farmers and Herders in Niger State Trained on Agricultural Insurance to Mitigate Risks.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

In a significant step towards enhancing the resilience of local agricultural communities, over 300 farmers and herders from the 25 local government areas of Niger State participated in a training session focused on agricultural insurance registration.

This initiative, organized by the Fulani Youth Development Initiative in partnership with the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), was held at the Federal Secretariat conference Hall in Minna.

The workshop aimed to foster peace among farmers and herders, increase awareness of available agricultural support programs, and ensure that participants can benefit from government-led initiatives.

Hon. Nma Kolo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs and Strategy, lauded the initiative during the event, highlighting its alignment with Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago’s vision to modernize agriculture and livestock production for enhanced economic benefits.

“The Bago administration is committed to building a modern agricultural and livestock system capable of generating revenue, creating jobs, and positioning Niger State as a leading producer of food and meat in Nigeria and Africa,” Dogara stated, emphasizing the necessity of peace for mutual prosperity in the sector.

Amb. Dr. Mujahid Adam, Chairman of the Fulani Youth Say Bago Again Initiative, noted that the campaign is designed to shield small scale farmers and herders from unexpected losses. “Many of our people suffer losses due to conflicts, floods, or disease without compensation. We aim to demonstrate how insurance can serve as a safety net during such challenging times,” he explained.

The training underscored that any registered farmer or herder whose cattle sustains damage can seek compensation through the NAIC scheme. “Our goal is to ensure that no farmer or herder is left behind,” Adam added.

Dr. Idris Abdullahi Lemu, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, represented SSG Hon. Abubakar Usman Gawu expressed gratitude to NAIC for its role in improving the livelihoods of rural dwellers. “The message is clear: register today and safeguard your future,” he urged participants.

Mr. Ayuba Maijama’a, NAIC’s North Central Zonal Coordinator, explained that the federal funded scheme provides subsidized insurance to farmers and herders across Nigeria. Established in 1987, NAIC is dedicated to supporting agricultural endeavors, ensuring that farmers are not left to bear the brunt of natural disasters alone.

“Farmers are only responsible for 50% of the premium, while the federal and state governments cover the rest,” Maijama’a clarified.

He assured participants of the efficiency and transparency of NAIC’s claims process, which promises prompt payouts following proper documentation.

In addition to insurance coverage, NAIC offers advisory services, engaging various experts to provide education and support both insured and uninsured farmers during field visits.

Maijama’a emphasized the unique aspect of this agricultural subsidy in Nigeria, which directly benefits the intended beneficiaries without diversion.

Participants hailed the event as timely and impactful, particularly amid ongoing climate-related challenges and market shocks that threaten agricultural productivity across the region.
