DSS Gives X 24 Hours Ultimatum to Remove Omoyele Sawore’s Twitter.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a stringent 24-hour ultimatum to X (formerly Twitter) to remove a tweet from activist Omoyele Sowore that allegedly disparages President Bola Tinubu, citing concerns over national security.
In a letter signed on behalf of the Director-General, the DSS asserted that the tweet, posted from Sowore’s verified account on August 25, 2025, poses a threat to Nigeria’s stability. The tweet reads: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
The DSS characterized the tweet as “disparaging” and “dangerous,” claiming it could incite unrest and escalate political tensions.
The notice emphasized that the content is not only misleading but also represents a violation of multiple Nigerian laws, including the Cyber Crimes Act 2025 and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The agency expressed concern that the ongoing circulation of the tweet has already sparked protests among supporters of the President, contributing to a volatile political climate.
In its communication, the DSS warned that failure to comply with the removal of the tweet and its retweets could result in “far-reaching, sweeping, and across-the-board measures” from the Federal Government for what it claims are criminal acts.
The agency provided a strict deadline of 24 hours for compliance, stressing the urgency of the situation and the potential implications of inaction.
