Kano Zoo Recovers Escaped Python from Former Accountant General’s Residence

The Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, announced the successful recovery of a python that had escaped from the residence of Ahmed Idris, a former Accountant General of the Federation. This incident sparked significant concern among residents of the Daneji and surrounding communities.
The escaped python, along with other exotic wildlife including a crocodile and a lion cub, has been relocated to the Kano Zoo following public outcry and safety fears. Residents expressed their anxiety over the presence of the snake in the area, emphasizing their inability to sleep peacefully until its capture.
In an interview, Muhammad stated that Idris had voluntarily surrendered the animals in response to the unrest caused by the python’s escape. He reassured the public that all animals are now safely housed within the facilities of the zoo.
Highlighting the legal framework surrounding the ownership of wild animals, Muhammad referenced the Wild Animal Law, which governs the keeping of certain species, both endangered and non-endangered, in private homes.
He clarified that while some animals may be kept by individuals, endangered species should only be held in controlled environments like zoos for conservation purposes.
“The law mandates that individuals obtain a license to keep wild animals, and that they provide an appropriate habitat and care for the animals,” he explained. “In this case, Idris had a valid license, and it is important to note that the lion found at his residence was still a cub and did not pose a danger to the community.”
Muhammad reiterated that once these animals grow beyond a certain age, they are required to be transferred to a zoo to ensure their safety and the safety of the public.
The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in wildlife ownership and the importance of responsible care for exotic animals.
