Niger State Partners AfricaRice in Groundbreaking $1.2 Billion Rice Production Initiative.
In a significant move to enhance agricultural productivity and scientific collaboration, the Niger State Government has entered into a strategic agreement with AfricaRice Farm Centre in Bouake, Côte d’Ivoire, valued at over $1.2 billion. This partnership is aimed at revolutionizing rice production in the state.
The initiative will be spearheaded by Niger Foods Ltd., which is responsible for driving the investment over the next five years.
The collaboration aims to dramatically increase Niger State’s annual paddy rice production from 1.5 million metric tons to an impressive 10 million metric tons by 2030.
Additionally, it emphasizes the development and implementation of climate-smart rice production technologies and innovative agricultural practices that align with the state’s unique agro-ecological conditions.
As part of the agreement, a comprehensive plan has been set to establish a 5,000-hectare farm dedicated to breeding, foundation, and certified seeds. This facility will produce 25,000 tons of high-quality seeds for cultivation across 500,000 hectares, which will include modern commercial farms spanning 100,000 hectares and micro, small, and medium-sized rice farms covering 40,000 hectares.
The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for over 100,000 individuals, ultimately leading to a targeted annual output of 10 million tons by 2030.
AfricaRice, a prominent member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), will contribute its expertise and cutting-edge technology, along with global development partners, to facilitate this transformative project in Niger State.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the Farmer Governor, hailed the partnership as a pivotal initiative that underscores the government’s dedication to achieving rice self-sufficiency, bolstering food security, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
He expressed confidence that this collaboration would enhance his administration’s transformative efforts and solidify Niger State’s position as a leading rice production hub, significantly contributing to food security in Nigeria and across Africa.
While touring the rice farms of AfricaRice, Governor Bago praised the commitment demonstrated in their rice production efforts.
The AfricaRice management reciprocated the commendation, recognizing Governor Bago’s impactful progress in agricultural development within Niger State and Nigeria as a whole.
