Niger State House of Assembly Moves to Enhance Security and Infrastructure at IBBU Lapai.

The Niger State House of Assembly has taken decisive action to tackle urgent security, educational, and infrastructural challenges within the state. In a significant move, the House has adopted the recommendations from the Joint Committee on Education, Security, and Intelligence following a thorough investigation into recent security breaches and robbery incidents at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai.

During the presentation of the committee’s report, led by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, the chairman, it was emphasized that a collaborative approach involving the legislature, executive, university management, security agencies, and local communities is essential in addressing the issues identified.

The committee’s findings underscored the detrimental impact these security breaches have had on students and the overall educational atmosphere at the university.

In response, the House has approved several key recommendations, which include:

– Accelerating legislation to regulate off-campus student accommodations, ensuring that safety standards and landlord responsibilities are upheld.

– Increasing funding for on-campus hostels to offer students safe and secure living conditions.

– Initiating a hotel project funded by the TETFund grant to improve the university’s infrastructure.

– Enhancing security measures by providing operational vehicles, surveillance equipment, and additional personnel to both the university and surrounding communities.

– Regulating housing rents in areas with a high concentration of students to protect them from exploitation by landlords.

The House reiterated its resolve to foster safe, affordable, and accessible learning environments for students throughout the state.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda, who presided over today’s session, directed the Clerk of the House to convey the resolution to the Executive for prompt action.
