Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group Calls for Urgent Action to Address Flood Disaster.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna.

In an urgent appeal for collaborative efforts to combat the devastating flood disaster in Mokwa Town, the Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group has urged stakeholders to work together to mitigate the ongoing crisis.

The group’s remarks follow a recent flood that resulted in significant loss of life and destruction of property, leaving many residents homeless.

During a statement made by the Group’s Chairman, Retired Assistant Controller-General of Customs Alhaji Ahmed Nasir, he emphasized the urgent need to address key issues arising from the disaster.

He called on both the Federal Government and the Niger State Government to implement proactive action plans and enhance infrastructure to tackle the recurring flooding problems in Mokwa Town.

“The recent flood disaster has underscored the necessity to address these critical concerns,” Alhaji Nasir stated. He highlighted the importance of immediate relief efforts while also stressing the need for sustainable long-term solutions.

The Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group expressed gratitude to the Federal and Niger State Governments for their timely response to the disaster.

The group commended President Ahmed Tinubu for approving a resettlement fund of N2 billion, along with the allocation of 20 truckloads of grains and a transformer for Mokwa Town.

Additionally, the group recognized Governor Umar Muhammad Bago of Niger State for his proactive involvement in rescue operations and the distribution of emergency relief materials. His commitment included a physical visit to the disaster site and the disbursement of N1 billion to facilitate the evacuation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to rented accommodations.

They also noted Governor Bago’s approval of N7 billion for the urgent reconstruction of bridges and the Mokwa-Rabba Road.

While expressing appreciation for the assistance provided to flood victims, the Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group urged both the Federal and Niger State Governments to expedite the fulfillment of their commitments.

They advocated for a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that involves collaboration between government entities, local leaders, and non-governmental organizations to effectively alleviate the challenges posed by flood disasters in Mokwa Town.

The group expressed its readiness to work closely with both levels of government to facilitate the resettlement plans for flood victims and improve essential infrastructure. They have formally requested that group members be included in the State Government’s resettlement committee to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach.

This statement emphasizes the urgent need for support and collaboration to rebuild and restore Mokwa Town in the aftermath of this tragic event.
