Niger Government Issues Urgent Flood Relocation Advisory Amidst Thunderstorm Forecasts.

In response to forecasts of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the Niger State government has issued a critical advisory for communities residing near riverbanks. Officials are urging these residents to promptly relocate to higher ground to mitigate the risk of potential flooding disasters.

Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication, Media, and Strategy, highlighted the pressing need for immediate action to ensure the safety of those living in vulnerable areas.

He emphasized that the state cannot afford a repeat of the recent floods in Mokwa, which tragically claimed over 200 lives and resulted in substantial property damage.

Despite prior warnings, Vatsa acknowledged that Niger State is particularly susceptible to flooding, with more than 2,000 communities situated alongside rivers across 15 local government areas.

“We need to be proactive to avoid experiencing another Mokwa disaster,” Vatsa stated, urging residents to heed the warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

In addition to the relocation advisory, the government plans to implement a statewide awareness campaign aimed at educating the population on the critical importance of moving to safer locations as the rainy season approaches. Residents will have the opportunity to return home once the season concludes.

The government is also calling on traditional, community, and religious leaders to assist in disseminating information and encouraging adherence to flood warnings within their communities.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s recent three-day weather outlook forecasts early morning thunderstorms in northern states, including Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, with heavier rainfall expected across various regions, including Borno, Zamfara, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi, Katsina, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa states, among others.
