NUJ Niger State Council Expresses Solidarity with Mokwa Flood Victims
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Niger State Council has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Nda-lile of Mokwa and the residents of Mokwa Local Government Area following the recent devastating flood disaster, which has claimed lives and inflicted property damage amounting to billions of naira.
In an official statement, Comrade Usman Chiji, the State Secretary of NUJ, characterized the incident as catastrophic for humanity, highlighting that the floods surpassed human imagination. He urged those affected to view this tragedy as an act of God.
Comrade Usman Chiji underscored the pressing need for well-planned and proactive measures, as well as effective legislation, to mitigate the annual occurrences of flooding, which often result in severe hardship for victims.
He emphasized that relevant authorities must go beyond merely issuing early warning signs; they must intensify efforts to ensure strict compliance with these warnings.
To raise awareness about the dangers of floods and other climate change-related disasters, he proposed implementing aggressive outreach campaigns using both media and traditional communication methods.
Notably, Comrade Usman Chiji pointed out that while property can be replaced, human lives cannot. He stressed the necessity for collaboration between the government and community members to ensure adherence to building codes and ongoing environmental sanitation efforts.
Furthermore, he conveyed that the NUJ shares in the collective pain of the people of Mokwa, particularly those most affected by the disaster.
He indicated that the floods should serve as a sobering reminder that natural disasters are often unpredictable, urging individuals to avoid activities that could lead to the unnecessary loss of lives and property.
In addition, he commended the efforts of governments, non-governmental organizations, individuals, and corporate entities that have donated cash and supplies to assist the flood victims.
He expressed hope that appropriate measures will be put in place to ensure transparency in the distribution of relief items.
Comrade Usman Chiji advised that rescue efforts should extend beyond Mokwa town, as some victims may have been displaced far away due to the flood’s intensity and speed.
