President Tinubu Directs Urgent Repairs for Failed Mokwa Bridge Following Flood Damage.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite repairs on the Mokwa bridge, a crucial link between Northern and Southern Nigeria, which was damaged due to recent flooding that affected roads and infrastructure in Mokwa town.

During a condolence and assessment visit to Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, Barr. Bello Mohammed Goronyo, the Minister of State for Works, emphasized the significance of the Mokwa road for national connectivity.

“We are here for two reasons: to express our condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the tragic loss of lives and property, and to assess the condition of the failed bridge,” the minister stated.

He confirmed that the President has mandated swift action to repair the bridge. A nearby construction company has been tasked with implementing temporary measures to render the bridge passable until permanent reconstruction can begin.

Minister Goronyo also visited an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp to offer sympathies to flood victims, stressing the urgent need for assistance. “These individuals require immediate help—shelter, food, medical care, and all the support we can provide. While the government is doing its part, I urge well-meaning Nigerians to assist,” he noted.

The minister commended the state government’s efforts and the contributions of others in mitigating the effects of the disaster.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, represented by Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, expressed gratitude for the federal government’s support, asserting that the state cannot adequately thank them for their timely response.

He acknowledged the dual nature of the disaster, citing natural causes and man-made factors, such as construction on waterways, and indicated plans for stricter enforcement of building regulations.

Additionally, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu Shaba, the District Head of Mokwa, welcomed the visit and called for continued support and prayers for those affected by the disaster.

Following the discussions, the Minister, accompanied by the governor and ministry officials, conducted an inspection of damaged bridges, culverts, and buildings in the area.
