Tragic Boat Accident Claims 37 Lives in Kwara State.
A devastating boat accident occurred on Thursday in the Gbajibo-Mudi community of the Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, resulting in the confirmed deaths of 37 individuals, according to reports from Daily Our Source.
Sources indicate that the boat was significantly overloaded, carrying more than 100 passengers at the time of the incident, although there were some survivors.
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, Abubakar Abdullahi, along with the Emir of the community, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Umar, are actively overseeing ongoing rescue operations.
The Boat was en route to a community in Niger State when it tragically capsized around 6:00 p.m. The majority of the passengers were traders traveling for commercial activities in Niger State.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy from October 5, 2024, in which a boat accident in Gbajibo-Mudi village claimed over 200 lives during the Islamic Maulid festival, highlighting ongoing safety concerns about overloading in the area.
Following that disaster, the state government allocated N2 million to cover medical expenses for survivors.
