President Suspends Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, effective immediately, and has initiated an investigation following three petitions filed against her.
This information was shared in a statement from the Office of the President on Tuesday.
According to the statement, after consulting with the Council of State, the President determined that a prima facie case had been established.
Consequently, a committee has been formed to review the petitions.
However, the statement did not provide specific details regarding the allegations contained in each petition.
As of the time this report was filed, Ghana’s presidential office had not released comprehensive details on the situation.
It is worth noting that Chief Justice Torkornoo, who is Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, was nominated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo and has served in this role since June 2023.
She had previously survived an earlier request for removal this year, when President Akufo-Addo indicated that several deficiencies undermined a petition aimed at her removal from the bench.
