Nigeria Union of Pensioners Holds North Central Forum Meeting

By Our Reporter in Nasarawa.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) convened its North Central Forum meeting in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, to address various issues affecting pensioners in the region.

The meeting took place at the Goream Hotel and brought together representatives from various states in the North Central Zone.

A communique, signed by Forum Chairman Comrade Clement Ohida and Forum Secretary Comrade Abraham Gana Jonah, was made available to journalists at the conclusion of the meeting, reads.

During the meeting, the forum commended Nasarawa State Governor Engr. A. A. Sule for his commitment to the welfare of pensioners in the state.

They acknowledged that the governor has ensured the timely payment of monthly pensions and gratuities, including for those at the local government level.

The North Central Forum reaffirmed its dedication to pursuing the welfare of its members, aiming to improve their living conditions.

The forum called on governors in the North Central Zone to prioritize the welfare of pensioners in their respective states.

Additionally, the forum urged both federal and state governments to adhere to the constitutional provisions concerning pension reviews. Specifically, they requested that governments conduct five-yearly pension reviews, as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The forum expressed appreciation for the federal government’s efforts to enhance the welfare of pensioners, noting that the government has approved various pension increases and palliatives, which have also been adopted by some state governments.

The forum commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for its advocacy in pressing for salary increases and consequent pension adjustments for workers and pensioners.

Furthermore, the forum encouraged its members to avoid divisive politics and to embrace unity and brotherhood, which are essential for achieving their goals and improving the welfare of pensioners.

They reminded state councils of the union to inform and educate their members about the importance of participating in the ongoing “Am Alive” exercise.

This initiative is designed to verify the status of pensioners and ensure that they continue to receive their pensions.

The North Central Forum meeting of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners concluded with a renewed commitment to enhancing the welfare of pensioners in the region.

The forum urged all levels of government to prioritize the welfare of pensioners and comply with constitutional provisions regarding pension reviews.

Representatives from various states in the North Central Zone, including Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau, attended the meeting.
