Niger State Government Mobilizes Medical Response for Tanker Explosion Victims

By Our Correspondent

In response to the recent tanker explosion at Dikko junction in Gurara local government area, the Niger State Health Team has swiftly initiated measures to provide urgent medical care for the affected individuals.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has directed that free medical services be offered, along with the deployment of adequate health personnel to all facilities treating the victims.

The state government extended its condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident, with Governor Bago expressing his sympathy during a recent statement.

Abdulbaqy Usman Ebbo, the Special Adviser on Digital Media and Strategy, announced on social media platform X that an 18-member multi-disciplinary medical team from the Ministry of Health has been assembled to ensure timely

medical treatment for the victims, in compliance with the governor’s directive.

This medical team, led by Dr. Tukur Bello, Commissioner of Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare, includes key officials such as Dr. Shehu Ahmed, Special Adviser on Health, and Dr. Murtala Bagana, Special Adviser on Special Duties.

The team has been actively deployed to provide urgent medical assistance at both Suleja General Hospital and Shehu Musa Yar’adua Hospital in Sabon-Wuse, Tafa local government area.

Upon assessing the patients’ conditions, it was determined that a significant number required intensive care, leading to a directive for their referral to tertiary healthcare facilities in Abuja.

As of the latest reports, 43 male patients were admitted at Suleja General Hospital on Saturday, January 18th, 2025. Sadly, 7 of these individuals did not survive, while 3 were discharged to recover at home and 10 were referred for specialized care in Abuja. The remaining 23 patients are receiving treatment for varying degrees of burns.

Meanwhile, at the General Hospital in Sabon-Wuse, 23 patients were initially admitted; 3 passed away within the first 6-8 hours, and 19 relatives opted to discharge their loved ones against medical advice. One patient in critical condition was referred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital in Abuja.

Ebbo also noted that the team from the Ministry of Health took the opportunity to deliver medical supplies and commodities donated by the Niger State Government to both hospitals.
