Breaking News : Federal Executive Council Approves $160 Million Financing for Niger State Solar Energy Project
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has earmarked $160 million funding package for the Niger State Solar Energy Development Project.
The financing includes $150 million from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and a $10 million contribution from the Niger State Government.
The project aims to expand electricity access, particularly in rural areas, by developing a 100-megawatt solar power plant in Niger State. It seeks to enhance power reliability, diversify Nigeria’s energy sources through renewable energy, and support sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, industrialization, and climate mitigation.
This decision comes after months of collaboration between the Niger State Government and the Islamic Development Bank.
In January 2026, Governor Umaru Bago hosted the IsDB project preparation team for the Niger Solar Electrification Project (NGA1063).
At that time, the project was valued at $163 million, with feasibility, environmental, and social impact assessments underway prior to final approval
